What is the hair growth cycle?

The hair cycle is a process that includes hair growth, loss and renewal. This cycle helps maintain hair density and health.

The hair growth cycle is generally divided into three main phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase and the telogen phase.

It is important to note that not all hair follicles go through these phases simultaneously. In fact, each follicle is independent and can be at different stages of the growth cycle. This is why a person can lose on average between 50 and 100 hairs per day without necessarily affecting the overall density of their hair.

Understanding the hair growth cycle is essential for treating potential problems, such as excessive hair loss or growth problems. By understanding this process, it is possible to take steps to promote healthy and beautiful hair.

The 3 phases of the hair cycle

The life cycle of a hair is made up of 3 distinct phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase and the telogen phase.

1. The anagen phase

The anagen phase, also called the growth phase, is the first stage of the hair cycle. During this period, the cells at the base of the hair follicle multiply, promoting hair growth at a rate of approximately 1 cm per month. The maximum length that a hair can reach is determined by the duration of this phase and can last several years, depending on the genetic characteristics of each individual.

2. The catagen phase

The catagen phase, or transition phase, marks the transition from active growth to the temporary cessation of hair maturation. The hair follicle stops growing. This phase is relatively short and only lasts a few weeks.

3. The telogen phase

The telogen phase, or resting phase, is the last phase of the hair cycle. During this phase, the hair follicle is inactive and the hair is held in the follicle without growing. The telogen phase lasts approximately 3 months before the follicle begins to produce new hair again, marking the start of a new hair cycle.

Factors influencing the hair growth cycle

The hair growth cycle can be influenced by different factors, including:

1. Genetics : the duration of the anagen phase and hair density are determined by genes. A family history of baldness can, for example, explain excessive hair loss.

2. Age : The hair cycle naturally slows down with age, which can lead to progressive hair loss and a decrease in hair density.

3. Hormones : Hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, menopause or andropause, can influence the growth cycle and lead to excessive hair loss.

4. General health : Factors such as stress, unhealthy diet, chronic illnesses and nutritional deficiencies can affect scalp health and disrupt the hair life cycle.

5. Hair treatments : frequent use of aggressive hair products (chemical dyes, perms, straightening treatments, etc.) can prevent good regrowth.

6. The environment : Exposure to UV rays and air pollution can also weaken hair.
