Written on 06/30/2025 by Pauline de Santarome

In summer, it's hard to resist the temptation to lie in the sun and relax while enjoying its rays. However, be careful: sunburn causes very unpleasant sensations, but above all, it is dangerous for the skin. The sun is the main cause of skin aging, and excessive exposure increases the risk of skin cancer.

What causes sunburn and how can you avoid it? Discover our tips in this article.

What is sunburn?

To understand what sunburn is, you need to know that there are three types of UV rays.

- UVA rays are not blocked by glass or clouds. They penetrate deep into the skin and can cause certain types of skin cancer. Their action oxidizes the melanin already present in the skin.

- UVC rays have much more harmful effects on the body. However, they cannot pass through the ozone layer.

- Finally, UVB rays, which cause sunburn, burn the epidermis and penetrate deep into the skin. These ultraviolet rays are responsible for the skin's tanning process through the synthesis of melanin.

The sun's UVB rays cause skin burns, against which the body provides natural defenses: tanning is a defense reaction. But if UVB rays are too aggressive, the cells of the epidermis are literally burned and destroyed. This iswhat causes sunburn.

Tips for avoiding sunburn

Blisters, redness, or itching are signs of sunburn when the skin is exposed without adequate protection or with low sun protection. But don't panic! We have solutions:

Apply sunscreen every two hours.

Sunscreen works on a simple principle: it absorbs harmful sun rays and forms a protective film on the skin's surface. The extent of sunscreen's effectiveness is indicated by its sun protection factor (SPF). Depending on your skin type, you can choose a higher or lower protection factor.

Cover up: hat, scarf, T-shirt, etc.

In summer, it is strongly recommended to cover up: a T-shirt, scarf, or cap are essential to avoid exposing too much skin to the sun. A light shirt or long-sleeved dress are essential items in your summer wardrobe.

Avoid exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

By exposing yourself to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, you increase your risk of sunburn and heatstroke, especially in young children. If your schedule allows, we recommend planning your outings for early in the morning or just before sunset.

Limit exposure time

Your exposure time to the sun should be directly related to your sunscreen SPF: the higher the SPF, the longer you can stay in the sun.

However, it is difficult to give specific advice on the ideal exposure time, as this is influenced by many factors: time of exposure, latitude, sunscreen index, etc.

In any case, keep in mind that fifteen minutes of daily exposure is enough to recharge the body with vitamin D.

How can you relieve sunburn?

Despite all these precautions, have you still got sunburn? Don't let it ruin your vacation. Here are some tips on how to relieve sunburn:

Moisturize your skin after sunburn

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause skin dehydration, which aggravates the effects of sunburn. It is important to maintain proper hydration by using a moisturizer or after-sun gel. Choose a soothing product such as aloe vera or chamomile, which can help reduce inflammation. Soothing creams are also available at pharmacies; ask your healthcare professional for advice.

Drink water if you get sunburned.

Sunburn dehydrates the skin and causes the body to lose water. It is therefore essential to rehydrate regularly. Drink plenty of water and don't hesitate to eat vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon or melon.

Cool the skin in case of sunburn

Here is a tip that we don't always think of to prevent sunburn from becoming too painful: you can cool your skin with a compress or a towel that has been dampened beforehand.

A bag of ice cubes on the sensitive area is also beneficial. However, be careful not to apply it directly, but to place a cloth between the ice cubes and the skin.

Take a cold bath

Cold water can be a great relief from the intense heat and discomfort caused by sunburn! Fill a bathtub with cold water and soak in it for a few minutes.

Get in the shade to avoid sunburn

This is, of course, the simplest solution: to avoid sunburn, the wisest thing to do is to avoid exposure. If your skin is sensitive to the sun and reddens easily, it is much more sensible not to spend too much time sunbathing on the beach. If you still want to enjoy the seaside, choose shaded areas and bring a parasol.
