Star anise

Origin and history

Star anise, also known as Chinese star anise , is the fruit of the Illicium verum tree, native to southern China and Vietnam. Used for millennia in traditional Asian medicine, it also found a place in European cuisine and pharmacopoeia as early as the 17th century thanks to trade. Its characteristic star shape gave it its name, and its aniseed aroma made it a highly prized spice.
