Vitamins

Origin and history

The term vitamin comes from the Latin word vita (“life”), because these substances are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, vitamins are essential micronutrients that the body cannot synthesize (or only very little), and which it must therefore obtain from food. Found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, vegetable oils, and animal products, they play a role in many vital functions: immunity, energy, growth, skin, vision, nervous system , and more. Each vitamin has a specific and complementary role.

Properties and benefits of vitamins

Each vitamin plays an essential role:

  • Vitamin A : protects the skin, vision and mucous membranes.

  • Vitamin B (B complex): supports energy metabolism, the nervous system and vitality.

  • Vitamin C : an antioxidant, it strengthens natural defenses and promotes iron absorption.

  • Vitamin D : supports the immune system and bone health.

  • Vitamin E : a powerful antioxidant, it protects cells from oxidative stress.

  • Vitamin K : plays a role in blood clotting and bone health.

Vitamins often act in synergy : for example, vitamins C and E mutually enhance their antioxidant power.
