Vitamins

Origin and history

The term vitamin comes from the Latin word vita ("life"), because these substances are essential for the body to function properly. Discovered in the early 20th century, vitamins are essential micronutrients that the body cannot synthesize (or very little), and must therefore obtain from food. Found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, vegetable oils, and animal products, they contribute to many vital functions: immunity, energy, growth, skin, vision, nervous system, etc. Each vitamin has a specific and complementary role.

Properties and benefits of vitamins

Each vitamin plays an essential role:

  • Vitamin A: protects the skin, vision, and mucous membranes.

  • Vitamin B (B complex): supports energy metabolism, the nervous system, and vitality.

  • Vitamin C: an antioxidant, it strengthens the body's natural defenses and promotes iron absorption.

  • Vitamin D: supports the immune system and bone health.

  • Vitamin E: a powerful antioxidant, it protects cells from oxidative stress.

  • Vitamin K: contributes to blood clotting and bone health.

Vitamins often work synergistically: for example, vitamins C and E mutually reinforce their antioxidant power.
