Origin and history
Peppermint is an aromatic plant resulting from a cross between water mint and spearmint. Known since antiquity, it was already used by the Egyptians and Greeks for its digestive and stimulating properties. Its Latin name, piperita, refers to its pungent and refreshing taste. Introduced to Europe in the 18th century, it quickly became one of the most popular medicinal plants. Today, it is cultivated worldwide for its essential oil, used in herbal medicine, cosmetics, and cooking.
