Origin and history
Collagen is a protein naturally present in the human body, where it makes up approximately 30% of all proteins. Its name comes from the Greek word kolla , meaning "glue," referring to its essential role in tissue cohesion and structure. Discovered in the 19th century, collagen is now widely used in cosmetics and dietary supplements for its effects on skin, joints, and overall vitality.
Several types of collagen are distinguished: type I (present in skin and tendons), type II (in cartilage) and type III (in soft tissues).
