The benefits and properties of ginseng

Native to the forests of the Far East, ginseng is an adaptogenic plant that rarely grows in the wild. Its main root, which can measure up to 20 cm in length, is light yellow in color with streaks and has white, brittle flesh. The use of ginseng dates back more than 4,000 years. Long used exclusively by the Chinese imperial family, it has become the symbol of traditional Chinese medicine, earning it the name "Root of Life."

Origin and history of ginseng

This adaptogenic plant belongs to the Panax family, which means "remedy that cures everything." The word ginseng comes from the words "root" and "man." This plant originated in the mountainous regions of China and Korea. It is cultivated in acidic, light soils for optimal growth. Formerly used in Asian countries to cure ailments and tone the five organs of the body, it later became known and coveted by the Western world for its virtues.

Appearance and format

The therapeutic properties of ginseng come from its roots. This plant has palmate lobes and whitish flowers, which produce small red berries resembling currants.

Yellow and white in color, ginseng looks somewhat like ginger. When ginseng reaches maturity, it can grow to a length of 10 centimeters.

There are two types of ginseng:

  1. White ginseng: the roots are washed and then left in the sun to dry for two weeks.
  2. Red ginseng: the roots are washed and then steam-treated before being dried in the same way as white ginseng.

The ginseng is then ground into powder so it can be made into capsules, tablets, liquids, or ampoules.

Ginseng contains several active ingredients that give it its medicinal properties:

  1. ginsenosides, which are the most important component of ginseng
  2. polysaccharides
  3. alkaloids
  4. glucosides
  5. phenolic acids

There are several varieties of ginseng:

  1. American ginseng
  2. Chinese ginseng
  3. Siberian ginseng
