Cola nut: an energizing seed
The kola nut comes from the kola tree, a tree native to the rainforests of West Africa (particularly Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria). It belongs to the genus Cola, and its two main species are Cola nitida and Cola acuminata. Sometimes called small kola, it is traditionally consumed during ceremonies to boost energy, promote speech, or as a symbol of welcome and goodwill.
This dried fruit contains a high caffeine content (up to 2.5%), as well as other natural active ingredients that make it an effective natural stimulant:
- Caffeine and theobromine : stimulate the central nervous system, improve alertness and physical and mental state.
- Polyphenols and flavonoids : powerful antioxidants, they protect cells and support the immune system.
- Saponins : act on lipid metabolism and help with weight loss.
- Tannins : provide digestive and slightly astringent properties.
Did you know? Pharmacist John Pemberton, creator of Coca-Cola in the 19th century, used an extract of kola nut for its tonic and medicinal properties.
