Cola nuts: an energizing seed
The cola nut comes from the cola tree, which grows in the tropical forests of West Africa (particularly Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria). It belongs to the Cola genus, and its two main species are Cola nitida and Cola acuminata. Sometimes called petit cola, it is traditionally consumed during ceremonies to boost energy, promote speech, or as a symbol of welcome and goodwill.
This dried fruit contains high levels of caffeine (up to 2.5%), as well as other natural active ingredients that make it an effective natural stimulant:
- Caffeine and theobromine: stimulate the central nervous system, improve alertness and physical and mental condition.
- Polyphenols and flavonoids: powerful antioxidants, they protect cells and support the immune system.
- Saponins: affect lipid metabolism and aid weight loss.
- Tannins: provide digestive and slightly astringent properties.
Did you know? Pharmacist John Pemberton, creator of Coca-Cola in the 19th century, used cola nut extract for its tonic and medicinal properties.
