Origin and history
Oregano, an aromatic herb emblematic of the Mediterranean basin, has been used since antiquity for its medicinal and culinary virtues. Its name comes from the Greek words oros (mountain) and ganos (joy), literally meaning “the joy of the mountains.” The Greeks and Romans considered it a sacred plant, a symbol of happiness and health. In traditional medicine, it was already renowned for its digestive and antiseptic properties. Today, oregano is valued as much for its powerful aroma as for its numerous natural benefits.
