Origin and history
The sweet orange, from the orange tree ( Citrus sinensis ), is an iconic fruit of the citrus family. Native to China and Southeast Asia, it was introduced to Europe in the 16th century by Portuguese navigators. Unlike the bitter orange (Seville orange), the sweet orange is sweet, juicy, and highly prized for its pleasant flavor and high vitamin C content. Over time, it has become one of the most consumed fruits in the world, a symbol of vitality and well-being.
