Origin and history
Electrolytes are essential minerals that, once dissolved in water, turn into positively or negatively charged ions. These ions are involved in many vital functions: regulating hydration, muscle and nerve function, acid-base balance, and maintaining blood pressure. The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate.
Naturally present in the body, they must be regularly replenished through diet, especially during physical exertion or hot weather, as they are eliminated through sweat.
